Scuba Club visits the Busójárás carnival in Mohács to find 'Images of Villages'
Travaux en cours - Recherche
Avril 2011
As part of the creation process of the TransAc co-production ‘Images of Villages’, Zsuzsa Rozsavolgyi, member of Scuba, is researching on traditions to find similarities between distant countries and information about the legends behind some of these celebrations, to gather information for the production of the creation.
Zsuzsa recently visited the celebration of the Busójárás carnival in Mohács (Hungary) where people cover their faces with scary masks and their bodies with puffy sheepskin. They make a huge party walking through the streets of the city, stop in front of the townhouse and burn winter in a coffin. People believe if these creatures spread ashes on them, on animals, on plants it will prevent sickness and aging. The masks are really similar to the Krampus masks that we can find in Germany, Austria, Slovenia or Croatia.
The research action is part of the creative process in order to ‘collect pictures, sounds, actions, looks, ideas on how to make a celebration of culture’ that will be the main story of the creation.
Images of Villages by Scuba Club Collective, Belamuhely and The First, the One and Only Slovenian Contemporary Dance Company, sets out to investigate villagers’ lifestyle in relation to the one of townsmen and/or citizens. It is focused on European rural traditions that historically set the ground for traditions present in urban environment of today and on comparison of these two, rural and urban.
